Meet our Herd!

Stanley

Equine Team member

Stanley came to us from a lady in Nova Scotia after a life long career as a lessons horse. He is a 25 year old (maybe older?) Appaloosa gelding with a beautiful spotted blanket for his coat. Although Stan might tell you that he’s the lead guy in the field, once you get to know him you know that’s just not true. Stanley is goofy, has been known to steal hats, and lick truck tires.

Cash

Equine Team member

Cash is a 17 year old Quarter Horse who came to help us out at It Takes the Herd and do equine facilitated wellness work with Stanley and Candy. Cash loves to roll in the mud, sleep in the sun, and he will usually be the first one to greet the humans at the fence line.

Candy

Equine Team member

Candy is a 22 year old standardbred mare who is new to our herd but very sweet. She loves children, but is wary of those who are older adult two leggeds. Pink peppermint candies will help greatly if you want to make friends with Candy. Candy has beautiful soulful eyes, and once you make friends with her, she will stay with you forever.

Nelson

Canine helper

Nelson is an eight year old Labrador and ‘leader’ (because the girls let him) of our equine pack. He is a certified St John’s ambulance therapy dog soon and does a lot of great work with his human dad and handler Tom in various places in our home town. Nelson is sweet and kind, and has a very serious case of ‘wiggle butt.’ He loves to meet new people, is gentle in his approach, and always has a toy in his mouth.

Ingrid

Canine helper

Ingrid is a seven year old Labrador and is Nelson’s niece and best buddy. Ingrid is a sweet girl who might just try to crawl up and sit on the couch beside you for cuddles. She also loves a great game of fetch and she will play this game for hours and hours.

Penny

Canine helper

Penny is a four year old bulldog who loves everyone she meets. She’s sweet and kind, and loves her canine herd mates but is a bit wary of the big ‘dogs’ Stanley, Candy and Cash. She also loves the cat even if the cat does not always love her back. Penny is a pretty good fetcher, but she really is great at giving and receiving hugs and kisses. She makes everyone feel important.

Bree

Feline observer, occasional leg rubber, boss lady

Brianna (Bree for short) is a 19 year old kitty who runs the show at It Takes the Herd. She supervises the dogs and lets them know when they’ve stepped out of line, and she ignores the horses. She sometimes likes to come over and pay attention to new humans, but like some of us, she might take a bit of time to warm up. Just like Susie, if Bree chooses you, it is indeed a special moment.
